In the morning we had a lovely breakfast together and after my bike was packed up, we finally took some pictures π And then it was time for the last hugs and to say Good-bye π₯Ί It was a fantastic time staying with Achim and Maria, all so relaxing. I hope we will meet again...Portugal, Lebanon or wherever in this world.
Todays destination is the Rhino Sanctuary, actually not a far distance, but it took me a while to get out of Kampala, or at least out of the worst.
At the Rhino Sanctuary I first had to pay USD50 π³πΈ, but that includes the tracking with a ranger. Then I had to drive another 5km to the main compound with the accommodation and campground. As their reception is also the Ranger Station I booked a hike at 16h00, so that I still had time to pitch up my tent. On the campground were some whartoks grazing.
At 16h00 I went back to the reception for my hike. They asked me about my motorcycle, until I realised I will need it as a transport as still a bit to go into the place. Of course it took me a moment as I got my clothes hanging on the bike to air out. Would have been faster to hop on one of their bikes π
Shortly after I had the introduction by the Ranger called Khalid and we were off into the bush - as protection only my boots π³π€·πΌββοΈ but we only went very slow about 2km out. From there it was walking. As the Rhinos are protected to (so far successfully) avoid poaching, we soon were approaching a mother and her youngster. THAT is amazing π€©, just about 20m away from us!!
After a while we moved on to find 3 rhinos having their snooze. It was a mother with her youngster and a adopted one - amazing, so chilled!!
Then we hiked a bit more zickzack through the bush, following occasionally noises, until we found the mother with her youngster. The mother was one of the founder Rhinos, so she was already in her 20s and had an impressive horn!! She was also one of the most protective ones, so shortly after we saw her, she walked off...
So we found our way back, passing again the first pair of Rhinos and shortly back to our bikes. THAT was so amazing, seeing these Rhinos so close in their natural habitat.
Back at the camping I went to the bar for a Soda, when I heard the girls at the table behind me chatting in portugues. As I was curious, I went to them talking. They were indeed from Portugal, Lisboa and Coimbra,, on holidays travelling Uganda.
After 19h00 I was back at the camping as, for my own security, I was not allowed to walk around.
They had the fire on, so after a snack (avocados π) I sat at the fire. About 20h00 I started to get tired sitting there and staring at the flames, but going to bed was a bit too early. LuckilyI had bought a stronger head torch in Nairobi, so I occasionally observed the surrounding. It looked always so iery to the eyes reflecting and moving - mainly gazelles or antΓlopes. Suddenly I realised something bigger moving towards the waterhole. It was a Rhino, actually two again. Wow, I went to the fence slowly to see it from closer.
That was so amazing! Glad I didn't go to my tent yet π After they were gone, about 20mins later came the next 2 to the water! How lucky is that!! So I went back to my position at the fence watching it. After they were gone, it was time to go to bed. Going to my tent, I realised there was just outside of the fence, next to my tent, another rhino π€©. So the sound to fall asleep is a whartok on one side and rhino on the other munching π.
