The next morning, after a lovely breakfast, I headed towards Zomba, hopefully finding a fuel station selling petrol 🙏🙏
The riding was lovely, but no luck about the petrol. Halfway I bought 1l on the black market, now for 5k 😳😳 That was the most expensive fuel I have so far bought for this bike!! At least, with the Guglatech fuel filter, I can feel a bit relaxed in case they stretched the fuel with water.
I made it to Zomba, where I thought I will finally get fuel and after 2 nights I will be on my way 🤭🤭 I wish!!
I checked in for a room, as I thought only for 2 nights, as they are not really cheap plus breakfast is seperat and no Internet!
I had a nice lunch and then I walked to the two fuel stations to find out any information. Rumours are tomorrow...
Back at the Guesthouse, I booked me in for an 4 hrs hike at the Zomba Plateau with Isaak, for the next morning. At least my fuel should still take me up to the meeting point and back down 🙏.
The next morning, after a delicious breakfast, I drove up to the meeting point at Songbird Hotel. I could leave my biking gear at their reception.
It was a lovely hike, but the first journey was just steep uphill to get to the Plateau area. I thought my lungs will burst!! And the locals do it daily up, to cut illegal wood and transport it on their head down 👀😳
Once we were up on the plateau, it was a lovely hike.At the end we passed a nice, small waterfall and back at the hotel the 4 hours were gone. After paying Isaak I went to get my clothes. The reception was so kind printing me my confirmation of accomodation in Mozambique and insurance. The only thing I need now is 10l of petrol and I am on my way!
So on my way into the village I passed the fuel station and now the queue was enormous. That made me a bit being concerned if everybody fills up their cars to the brim plus canisters, how long one lorry will last 😱🤔
As nothing seems to happen, I went back to the hotel and checked in for another night.
The next day no petrol was scheduled to come in so I booked in for another night. Unfortunately then they would be exclusively booked, so I might have to look into another accomodation.
The next evening a Belgium couple, from the WhatsApp group, was there and they had 1l of fuel for me. At least I can now roam around in town if needed.
The owner helped me trying to find another accomodation for the next night(s), and it was just across the main road, so still close by the fuel stations.
The next morning I walked to the supermarket, which takes uou along a lovely walking paths at the golf course (😳). I could stay at the hotel until lunchtime, and when I was about to leave there was the news, finally a lorry arrived! No point of queuing up right now, but keep an eye on the queue that was just in front of the gate of the hotel.
About 18h00 it seems noticeable move, so I got into the queue. I knew the BodaBodas were having their own queue but in the dark I couldn't see the way they get there, baring on mind they are smaller than my bike with the panniers.
Pedestrian, bikers and even car driver told me I have to the biker queue. I didn't really wanted yet to try to get there, and in 20mins it was constantly, but slowly, moving. After that it got to a standstill for another 20 mins. Another car driver was very demanding about me going to the front, so I followed him. He stopped right at the entrance of the filling station and told me to wait. Next thing he comes with a military guy looking after me. After thanking he went with his wife. That was very kind of him. 5mins later the military guy called me to the pump and 5mins later I got my 10l, and some guys started to shout, so I was quickly out of there. I felt relieved but also sorry that I jumped the queue.
So I finally, after 3 extra nights, I am off tomorrow.
